This made-for-TV movie is a sobering tale of how war can bring out the worst in people. The writers added depth to the original Isao Takahata anime which mainly focused on the relationship between a teenage boy and his young sister left orphan during wartorn Japan and forced to find sustenance on their own.

The 2005 version focuses on the growing divide between the teenage boy and the family friend (played by Matsushima Nanako) who initially takes them in after their mother is killed during an air raid. As rice rations grow scarce, the kindly housewife soon turns cold as she has to choose between feeding her sick son or the two orphans.

The movie is in commemoration of the 60 year anniversary of the end of WWII, and at times, is remniscent of a CBS afterschool special. As if the antiwar message isn’t already clear, at the end of this recent version, two of the main characters reiterate the tragedies of war. “Yes my daughter, war is bad. Look at what it has done to these poor kids.”

Well casting, particularly of the little girl, makes the story enjoyable, but viewers might still prefer the original. Still, recent version was one of the highest rated programs of the year.

a definite anti-war movie. just like the anime and the book, this follows the story of how frightening a war can be, how it not only affects the powerful, but mostly those who are innocent.

Setsuko and Seita are brother and sister living in wartime Japan. After their mother is killed in an air raid they find a temporary home with relatives. Having quarreled with their aunt they leave the city and make their home in an abandoned shelter. While their father's destiny who was a soldier is unknown the two must depend on each other to somehow keep a roof over their heads and food in their stomachs. When everything is in short supply, they gradually succumb to hunger and their only entertainment is the light of the fireflies.

Mathieu, 18, spends the summer at his mother's summer house, in Brittany. On the beach, he meets Cédric, a boy his age. A love-story begins between the two boys.
The story unfolds with Mathieu, after suffering from depression; revisit his family summerhouse to pull his life together. It is the same place where two summers ago he met his first boyfriend, someone he just broke up with. Upon arriving, Mathieu pick up a wild cat that's roaming on the street. In the flashback, when Mathieu arrives his family summerhouse for vacation he "picked up" a wild child, Cédric, who basically lives on the street. Instantly we can draw the connection between Cédric and the cat: Mathieu said to the cat "You are cute but you stink". It reminds us in the flashback how he rehearses his introduction line to Cédric to the mirror: "I must admit you are pretty cute". After Mathieu bathed the cat he said you are my little prince charming, just as the carefree and attractive Cédric would be to any gay teenager falling in love for the first time. But there is the less fortune comparison: like the cat, Cédric, as much as he wants Mathieu, is unable to reciprocate the kind of affection Mathieu needs in a relationship.

Quit entertaining and watchable. It has a bit of suspense, a bit of minor violence, a scary character, all overlaid onto a professional beach volleyball setting. The female cast, Melissa Keller and Kayla Ewell, do a great job in the competition scenes with the aid of some shrewd directing. Melissa Keller adds an engaging acting personality to her long established fashion and swimsuit modeling credentials. Some rear nudity shower scenes are the likely source of the R-rating, but this is not an offensive movie. Although lightly done, all of the summer entertainment features are present: great visuals, sports competition and personal best, rivalry, a very bad guy, police and crowd scenes, romance, etc.

A Spanish coming of age story focusing on the antics of both 17 yo Nico and Dani, who have a posh beach house almost all to themselves one summer. This is also a summer of sexual awakenings. Krámpack means mutual masturbation, so the USA release was retitled into Nico and Dani...
The ending is great, the movie has parts of good intelligence. Take a minute and think of every aspect, every detail. Fernando Ramallo and Jordi Vilches are the boys. Their performances are great. Photography is amazing, with shiny views of the catalan coast. American pie subject with elegance and sincerity.The old way! Superb!
