El libreto de Lin Yan-ru, A.D. Lin y Chen se inspira en las experiencias amorosas de algunas amigas lesbianas de esta última para retratar los vínculos de una serie de personajes a través de cuatro relatos independientes.

En la primera historia, dos viejas amigas comienza una relación que pronto florece y se convierte en algo estable. Todo parece perfecto pero con el paso del tiempo la más mínima diferencia se interpone entre ambas con la ruptura siempre en el horizonte. En la segunda, una joven introvertida que trabaja como chef se obsesiona con la gente que conoce a través de Internet. Gracias a la red, comienza a citarse con una mujer madura. Aunque la relación parece progresar, las personalidades de una y otra colisionan revelando una necesidad irracional de encontrar un compañero para combatir la soledad. En la tercera, Summer y Spancer son dos jóvenes entre las que se ha ido fraguando a lo largo de los años un amor inquebrantable, pero todo puede tambalearse ante la inesperada boda de la primera. A pesar del enlace matrimonial, ambas prometen reencontrarse al cabo de unos años. Season 1 Finale: Markus attempts to hold a huge meeting of community leaders in St. Louis, to form a government, but Valhalla Sector already knows about it. Kurdy tries to find help for Elizabeth, who is dying from gunshot wounds, and Jeremiah goes to the Valhalla Sector-controlled town of Milhaven in search of answers of his own.

Jeremiah and Kurdy are told to bring Theo to Thunder Mountain, as part of Markus' plans to unite the local community leaders. Not all of Thunder Mountain agrees, though, and some plot to discredit Markus and his plan.

Jeremiah and Kurdy learn that Lee Chen is a spy who's been keeping information about the Big Death from Markus. They soon learn of a group of adults who had natural immunity to the Big Death and have been collecting information about the disease's origin and imminent return... and the truth about Valhalla Sector.

Jeremiah and Kurdy go to Denver in order to obtain new books. Kurdy saves the library from extremists and Jeremiah meets up with an old friend.

Jeremiah and Erin go to help Erin's twin sister after a message asking for help. Kurdy and Elizabeth travel to offer help to a Black Power group who have sought isolation.

Jeremiah and Kurdy travel to meet again with Theo. They don't find her but they do find trouble in a brothel and end up helping out the circus.

The Thunder Mountain team help out a settlement, hoping to receive intelligence should Valhalla Sector come that way. Jeremiah encounters his 'brother' Ezekiel and learns more of the fate of his father.

Jeremiah and Kurdy visit a self-sufficient community with the hope of setting up an alliance. Jeremiah finds an old friend, the person who first started him writing to his father.

The year is 2021, 15 years after a plague has killed nearly everyone over the age of puberty (both the event and the virus itself are referred to as "The Big Death"). The children who survived are now grown, and find themselves faced with two choices: either continue to scavenge off the diminishing remains of the old world, or begin trying to rebuild.
